This has always been a forum for honestly and in that spirit, I'll admit that I only watch the Golden Globes for the fashions. I just put the chow-chow on mute and let the dresses do the talking.

I went through the interwebs and gathered my favorite of what the celebs wore. There was won clear winner in my mind. See you if agree :)


Emma Stone is STUNNING in this Lanvin piece. Sultry, all woman, gorgeous.

Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci Premiere looks divine. The beading on this dress is incredible. PS- the skirt is covered with feathers!


Nicole Kidman is right on trend and showing off her KILLER body in a fitted, Egyptian-inspired Versace gown from there S/S 2012 collection. But seriously, where does she work out!?


Julianne Moore took a risk with a peplum-embellished Chanel gown. I'm a sucker for risk takers so I LOVE THIS.


I love this lady. Kate Winslet is the epitome of a classy dame in Jenny Packman. (though I do feel her hem is a touch too short).

I'm not too familiar with Shailene Woodley but her dress caught my eye. The design and drape of this Marchesa dress is nothing but Grecian goodness.

Paula Patton is in the winning circle with her choice of color. The marigold of this Monique Lhuillier dress makes Paula absolutely radiant.

AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE OF THE EVENING...

Angelina Jolie is smoking in her Atelier Versace gown. It screams siren. She is the embodiment of old Hollywood glamor. The drama in this dress set the red carpet on fire.

Color Wheel Theory

I do a LOT of talking about colors and their relationship to each other all the time. When I'm with clients, I try to help them see the way one color can "highlight" another tone in another color that's next to it. (huh?)
It's the same theory behind when someone says, "It really brings out your eyes".

Essentially, colors play off each other. True, your skin color, hair color, and lighting all play a part in the way a color reads on you BUT, you also have a consistent "undertone" to your skin that's never changing. Sometimes it's referred to as a season and, unless you're tanning like a guidette, your skin's general predisposition of color is always there. This is an element I use when working with clients- find colors to flatter their undertones. So if you're a Spring, you have more golden undertones accented with pink in your cheeks. If you're a Fall, you have more earth-colored undertones with red to accent your cheeks. You can read more about it by going to this website. BUT, to better understand any color theory, you have to first have some knowledge in the color wheel. Complimentary colors, tertiary colors, and secondary colors. You know this stuff already, you just don't know it. Sometimes seeing it laid out with pictures and bullet points makes it more accessible. This website did a great job explaining the basics. Try to take it from there and use this information in your own wardrobe. To give you a place to start, I have a question for you. If you answer* it, you're already a better stylist than you think you are:

If tertiary colors come from secondary colors and primary colors mixed together, it stands to reason that, since they're all from the same "family" of colors, that "family" of colors will look good together...in clothes??

Be a Pretty Pedal Pusher

Do you remember what is was like to ride your bike for the first time? Even with training wheels on, you felt free, alive, and suddenly completely in control of your own world. The idea of riding off into the sunset in search of greater adventures was suddenly as appealing as seeing if you could stand up with your feet on the pedals. Back then, we were kids who rode a bike for the sheer enjoyment of pretending it was a pony, or a car. What you wore mattered only if you were cruising next to a cute boy...or girl.

But what happens when you grow up? The training wheels come off and instead of a valiant steed braving a dark forest, the steed becomes your car...and only mode of transportation. What you put on suddenly counts but in a different way. Functionality. Now, you have to plan ahead and figure out what to wear because your adventures as a commuter are real and happening beyond the comfort of your driveway.

A few months ago, I asked friend and bike commuter Kelsey (not the girl pictured above) to give me her opinion on what contemporary bicyclists need their clothing to do and if those needs were being met from the fashion industry. The interview* came right around the same time 7X7 magazine published on article about Levi's announcing the release of a new line of clothing aimed at assisting the very specific market of urban commuters. The one draw back: it's for men only. Though they completely isolated the ladies, Levi's slight improvements to their pieces were something you can easily incorporate into your wardrobe. Go for tops/tunics that run long in the back to make sure you're doing your part to "just say no to crack", and comfy pants that won't pinch as you ride slightly bent forward.

Essentially, Kelsey revealed that ladies riding bikes need something "that is easy to wear, to clean, to pack, and keeps somewhat dry". The biggest hassle wasn't getting dirty (as I had assumed) but sweating. Since you can't really stop yourself from sweating, though I'm sure we've all tried, you can seek out items in fabrics that breath. And if those are few and far between, become a layering a queen. As a stylist, I'd like to tackle this from a style perspective. Active bike rider clothing isn't something I find to have the best aesthetics. So, I put together an outfit based on my method when it comes to layering: start with the bottoms and go from there.

My favorite things about these jeans is they have a 9" rise! (Most denim in general come as low-rise, typically have a 7"- 7 1/2" rise). These are great for flats OR tucking into boots.

This top is great because it's simple without being boring but it's also part linen so you get excellent wicking qualities from the fabric. Not to mention, it's tunic length which keeps the potential crack exposure down to a minimum. Remember that unless you're like me and constantly freezing in your office, any jacket you're wearing will eventually come off so make sure the top you have on underneath can stand on it's own and create an outfit.

This cape cardigan is not only right on trend this winter season but also super easy to style by layering over just about any top.
Stylist tip: try using long sleeve shirts with a print or interesting detail because you'll still see it peaking out from the cape sleeve.

Quite possibly my favorite shoe brand, Born revamped their "Liddy" flat to have a more tapered and pointed toe, a silhouette flattering on every body type. You can't find flats more comfortable, and durable, than these. They come with extra cushioning on the inside and great arch support, perfect for tromping around the city when you're done biking.

And when the whether gets colder and rainier, opt for some boots. They'll keep you warm and dry all the live long day. I just bought these cuties and LOVE them. They have a slight wedge for some added height and a rubber sole, which increases the life of the shoe in general.

To take this outfit from day to night, pack a clutch and a statement necklace and you're golden, no change of clothes required.

Hopefully my tips have helped illustrate that you don't necessarily need to buy cycling specific clothing. You can easily look great on a bike with an outfit styled around the idea of ease, comfort, and length. Expect to get dirty and sweaty, that's just a natural occurrence when you're a bike commuter, but at least this way you know you have some options.

-What would you say are the basic demands/needs of bicycle commuters, as far as attire?

I think the basic demands for clothes is something that is easy to wear, to clean, to pack and keeps some what dry. It would also be amazing if it looked nice!

-What are some of the most common occurring issues- environment wise- that you run into as a cyclist? Are your needs to solve these dilemmas being met with the clothing that’s on the market now?

I think that in this city the issues are mostly weather related. It could be really nice outside and 20 minutes later it could be raining. There are clothes out there for weather conditions but they might not be very fashionable!

-Can you travel without always bringing a change of clothes?

I think it is possible to travel with out bringing extra clothes but be prepared to be sweaty for a bit after your ride. If you are going on a date or interview I would bring an extra shirt! Unless it’s a date with a cyclist then he will be sweaty too!

-Do you have any secrets for increasing the longevity of your commuter wear? (ie how to wash a/o pre-treat an item)

When I was commuting every day to work I would bring an extra shirt, so that is just regular washing. My pants that I wore are Adidas and I love them. I think they are running pants but they worked for biking. I have had them for about 5 years too, so they are worth every penny I spent at sports basement (bit of a discount!) -What’s up with the hem of your pants? Other than tucking in, how do you keep them clean and hole free?

I don’t tuck my pants in, that’s a little too dorky for even me. But I do roll. Rolling is a little less dorky and keeps your pants free of holes and grease. There are a few riders that use the straps around the ankles too.

-What are some of the ways you keep your clothing clean when en route?

Don’t ride through mud puddles? Honestly, your clothes don’t get super dirty when you are just ridding around the city, unless you have to change a flat and then you could get grease somewhere. Mostly just on your hands though. Dirt isn’t really the problem, sweat is! The only way to fix that is to bring an extra shirt or ride slower.

-What are your favorite brands? Do your pieces wear out quickly?

I love Rapha and because I have the best boyfriend I actually have some of their clothes. Rapha is kind of pricey but amazing! http://www.rapha.cc/shop/

I think jeans wear out quickly if you wear them every day on rides. I think, if you like something that you wear to commute, buy two or three pairs.

-What’s your favorite store? For commuter-specific clothing and also in general, where do you find pieces that hold up and are cute?

I think Sports Basement has good deals and they offer discounts. I don’t really have one store I go get all my bike clothes from. If I like it and wear it, it will probably end up getting a ride on my bike!

-Is there enough variety in the clothing that is available?

There can always be more variety in bike clothes, especially for women. It is really hard to dress up for a party or going out and have it be bike friendly. It would be great to have some pretty going out bike clothes.

-Is there a disadvantage in clothing options, being a female cyclist? The Levi’s series is for guys only.

Yes there is a disadvantage. I think women like to wear really cute things most of the time if they are going out, or to a meeting, a date and not that men don’t but there just isn’t tons of options for women. Levi’s better get the ball rolling on women’s bike jeans. Those would be awesome!

-What do you think of the additions Levi’s made in their commuter series items in general?

I think all the reinforcements are great. That’s what you need in bike jeans. Again, they need a few pairs for women and not just stick women but women with thighs and calves who ride all the time. I think they have most of what they need; a treatment that makes fabric both water-resistant and dirt repellant and Clariant's Sanitized treatment, so you get durability plus built-in odors protection. Also double treated light-stretch denim, reinforced stitching in high-stress areas (crotch, pockets, etc.), and reflective 3M Scotchlite fabric tape in key areas. Sounds good to me! I also love that in that article they wrote “ because, let's face it, you get sweaty while biking.” So true!

Coffee Cup Inspiration

I sometimes find inspiration in the strangest places. In fashion, a designer must often go outside their own mind to find something that strikes them. Something that plucks the right heart strings. Because if you just create strictly from your own head, you run the risk of becoming totally self-involved; no longer in touch with the real world. Even as a stylist- someone who designs "looks"- I must do the same. We both know that fashion is cyclical and if you're not careful, you can become complacent.

I recently came across an ad for Sharpie in my Teen Vogue (still not sure why that was in my mailbox) that I found to be extremely inspirational, and according to this New York Times article, that was the intended message.

peek-a-Boey

Artist Cheeming Boey took unassuming, blank coffee cups and turned them into little objects of art. Some have very elborate images while others are cute and quaint. His skill level clearly runs the gamut but what struck me most was the tagline Sharpie uses now to market themselves. Followed by the question "What are you gonna start?", the ad encourages you to "uncap what's inside". I like that idea, tapping into yourself because you never really know what you're capable of.

Coming at this from a sartorial perspective, I decided to urge you all to give prints a chance. I really like the black and white contrast in Boey's work and luckily, printed bottoms seem to be the easiest and most flattering way to incorporate my inspiration into your own wardrobe.

Remember the 90s

I just wanted to share a link with you all. It helps reveal why I love/miss the 90's so much. The style was easy and so wrapped up in nonchalance and comfort that by today's standards it seems sloppy. Nowadays I see immaculate style on girls who are quick to calculate an outfit, so much so I'd say it's become rather formulaic. We've seen this girl or some version thereof a thousand times:


The ubiquitous T-shirt and jeans kind of cool. Been there, seen that.

What I really miss is the slap-dashness of the 90's. I miss the plaid baby-doll dresses with DocMartens, vests, boxy blazers, jeans worn up to your nose, mismatched pieces, and the overall feeling of not caring (too much) about what you're wearing:

The good news, it seems the 90s are slowly but surely still making their way into the mainstream, mostly because with all things in fashion, give it 20 years and it will eventually come back as "new". That and Pearl Jam is celebrating the 20 year anniversary release of their monumental album "Ten" this month. We should remember that music and the street were the engines that drove fashion back then and personally, I'm hungry to feel that kind of connection once more...

Kate Spade Paper, Something Worth Writing For

Many moons ago, my sister bought me a set of flat cards by Kate Spade. I'm an old soul at heart and prefer to write my thank you notes and most correspondence by hand (I'd say it's a dying practice) so these were the best gift. They arrived in a slim, sturdy, green box and had just the right amount of whimsy to tickle my fancy.

There were two types of cards, both done on white cotton paper by Crane & Co. One set had "How the devil are you?" in a beautiful, embossed, gold script at the top of the card while the back envelope flap had a matching embossed silhouette of a devil, complete with horns and pitchfork. The other set said "See you later, alligator" as a signature and had a cute gold alligator on the envelope. They were absolutely adorable and I'm SO sad I don't have any left but I did find several more that are already on my birthday and Christmas lists :) (ps- the boxes make great stocking stuffers...just saying)...

How-To Series: Stay Stylish When Your Weight Fluctuates

There is a never-ending war being waged between women and food. As a result, we bounce between 5 to 10 pound weight gains and loses all the time. Our constant yo-yoing forces us to scold the pastries for being so delicious while we begrudgingly attempt to eat all our greens. Why can't vegetables taste more like cake? I don't think I'm asking too much here!
...but I digress.

Amen Cookie Monster.

With our eternal cycle of being up and down in weight, getting dressed in the morning can be a bit tricky. "Tight" is rarely flattering and jeans are usually the first sign you've added some bulk when you find yourself on your back, lying on the bed armed with pliers so you can get the button buttoned and zipper up. (note for the fellas: there's a reason your girlfriend/wife has a pair of "fat pants" in the closet. We all do! They're our "in case of serious weight gain" emergency pants. Get over it). Just because things are feeling a bit small doesn't mean you need to suffer back-fat and muffin tops. There's not even a need to buy a whole new wardrobe. You probably already own a few of the items that work best (aka still fit) when you seesaw in size.

The Blazer. The structure of the jacket will hide your sides and front (when buttoned) while the overall style keeps you looking sharp and put together. Look for a two-button design whose lowest button meets just underneath your natural waistline. It will bring in your waist to help create an hourglass shape.


Stylist Tip: wear a flowy top underneath. The extra volume will hide your midsection.

The Shirtdress. Always a classic and a wardrobe staple. The length should be at a universally flattering length (at the knee, just above the knee, or just below the knee) and you should be able to create a loose or tight hourglass shape by belting at the waist.


Stylist Tip: don't be afraid to switch out the belt that comes with the dress for one with texture or color or both!

The Legging. The elastic waistband and stretchy materials will conform to your body when you're at your lightest and heaviest but always be super comfy. Keep your upper half in business-appropriate tops and jackets and you're good for work.

Stylist Tip: look for leggings with the construction details of pants (back pockets, fly front, and scoop pockets) and in thicker fabrics- they look more polished than those that you just pull on.

The Jersey Knit Dress. Designer Rachel Pally is known for her high quality fabrics, and beautiful, easy cuts. For our purposes, I choose a printed, empire waist dress because prints are distracting and will keep the eye moving. The empire waist will drape in a way to hide any belly bulge. Both are key elements to derision when you're feeling a little inflated.

Stylist Tip: when it gets colder, throw on your leggings, boots, and a jacket as long as the dress and you're golden!

The Tunic. A perfect topper to complete a look made from leggings and a blazer. The length should hide your bum to keep you decent and the stomach should either be hidden underneath the folds of fabric (like the example below) or be billowy enough to do the same thing. For a voluminous top, use a blazer to control the volume so you don't lose your shape entirely and wind up looking bigger on top than you are. That would be counter productive.


Stylist Tip: avoid tunics in materials that cling to your body instead of drape a/o skim. This example clings in the hips but has enough fabric to create bulge-hiding folds. The folds stack up on top of each other to create the illusion of a flat tummy.

All these items should be in your closet. If they're not, start a shopping list. Having them means you're prepared (and well armed) should you wake up tomorrow morning feeling...not your best. And on your thinner days, use them as concealers for when you want to really chow down and enjoy some good food. A little visual manipulation goes a long way in war. Now if only someone could force broccoli to surrender and let the desserts take over...

San Francisco Symphony: Orchestrate Your Outfit

As much as we all say "you couldn't pay me enough to ever go back to high school"- and as much as I completely agree- there is one thing I do miss about it: the dances. When I was a teenager, the thought of billowy dresses with big hair and makeup inflated my spirits and shot me sky high when I slipped on the heels. My every-other-day high school life was spent in flip flops and tank tops. I was an athlete growing up in southern California so reasons to get dressed up were few and far between. But the dances...they were there to give your inner girly girl an night out. Now that I find myself well out of high school and even college, I've discovered "prom" type occasions are even more scarce. Apparently adults no longer want a reason to gallivant throughout the night in a fancy dress and sharp suit...unless of course it comes with a striking orchestration courtesy of the San Francisco Symphony (SFS).

Like any reasonable stylist out there, I love an excuse to play dress up. The San Francisco Symphony celebrates it's 100th season this year with an opening night fast approaching. You know what that means right? Time to ask your mom to take you shopping because you're going to the gala with the hottest boy at work and you need a new dress and shoes. And bag. Probably hair and makeup too. But it will totally be worth it because not only is your date going to look so cute in a suit, the night has the promise of magic!
But I digress...

The Opening Night Gala (held this season on September 7th) is the only night guests wear formal attire. Every other show you can wear business or cocktail clothing; however, for the opening show of a centennial season I think that throwing on a little extra shellack is called for. This then begs the question of: what am I going to wear? Lucky for you, Bloomingdale's has some pieces that are sure to be music to your...ears?

Tickets to the symphony are more than affordable (they start at $15!) but if attire and ticket cost are still a concern, you're in luck. There will be a FREE concert the night after the Opening Gala in honor of the symphony's triple digit birthday. Festivities begin at 1130am but the concert starts at noon. September 8th is a Thursday but on the chance of a clear, SF summer day with free music, you might just find yourself skipping there.

Mad Men Style Sweeps the Nation: Are you a Betty or a Joan? A Pete or a Don?

With the 4th season of AMC's hit TV show Mad Men airing soon, they're doing a recap of all of the previous episodes to catch people up. It's one of those shows my husband and I were never interested in until everyone starting raving about it, then we never started because we were behind. Even if the show turned out to be crap (which it isn't), I would have loved it anyway due to the set and costume designs.

Now I've officially jumped on the Mad Men bandwagon. (1) In my house- mid century modern is the one design style my husband and I can agree upon- and (2) in my closet because my curves love 1940-1950's era styles. And I know I'm not the only one....

I think several of you are aware of my love for all things 90's. (and if you're not, then I'm not talking about it enough) Sure the 80's were great, the time of my childhood, and seem to be everlasting with several styles still sticking around today. But, the 90s are where it's at, and I can prove it!

Who What Wear recently published a post on looks they love. The subject? Florals! And not just any florals, LARGE PRINT florals! I know you know that's a 90s thing. Needless to say, I had to share it with you here.

Like myself, you may have decided to give the ol' string bikini suit a heave-ho into the forgotten depths that is the back of your closet in lieu of something a little more conservative. If you've read my previous blog posts on all of the cute one-piece and plus-sized swimsuits available this season, that might have helped you make the switch (it did me). I was more than happy to get rid of the floss meant to cover my "bits" because I knew I never really felt comfortable in something so tiny anyway.

Litter SF: Body Jewelry

Among the many truths I live by as a stylist, one is that a T-shirt and jeans will look 10X better if you jazz it up with a little jewelry. Nothing like a little sparkle and shine to help elevate your look as well as your mood. And when those happy baubles come from a San Francisco-based designer, it's like the cherry on top. One line I love has focused their glitz into pieces that are industrial and worn like armor. Nothing is typical and their brilliance lies in pieces like harness necklaces, gauntlet/sleeve bracelets, and garter chains. I always say you can be anyone you want to when you get dressed in the morning so why not be a fashion warrior, literally?!

Litter SF is a San Francisco-based company where the designer sisters create a particular kind of jewelry. They grabbed my attention when I saw their work in a past issue of 7X7 magazine. For me, the earth moving moment came when I saw the pièce de résistance, the harness necklace. I'd never seen anything like it and being a jewelry jockey (aka, magpie) it blew my mind. I had never even thought of having chains and metal hang around my neck and torso!
...I was hooked.

Jumpsuits and Rompers, Not Just For Kids

I have a thing for one-stop dressing. If I can get a complete outfit out of one garment, I'm all about it. That's why I think I've been particularly obsessed with jumpsuits. I've had one in mind since my sister announced she was getting married and all I could see flash before my eyes was my potential wedding wardrobe (I think that's a hazard of being a stylist...you can't help but fashionably fast-forward to certain events and day dream about all the sartorial possibilities!) For me it was like lightning struck and I've wanted to wear a jumpsuit to the rehearsal dinner ever since. So I started looking online and found some goodies. I've even got some advice on how to wear one beyond the warmth of Spring and Summer, in case you've been toying with the idea of wearing one too :)

This one is my favorite! The print is fun and the cut is simple enough to transition well into the Fall. It's an ideal design for layering T-shirts or long-sleeve T-shirts underneath and the length of the pant is long enough to be tucked into boots when it starts to cool down or rains. The only problem, this little number is from the Junior's department...I'm not too old, right?!

Just like the saying goes, an oldie but a goodie. It has a similar simplicity in its design like the previous one but with a more effortless style so you can wear it with that elusive nonchalance you see in other fashionable gals. It's a different kind of sexy.

I know this isn't an image of a jumpsuit but my reason for pulling this image is because the cut of the pants is similar to what you'll find in a jumpsuit. So if you want to try a print AND a jumpsuit but are apprehensive about doing it in one piece, just find a cute pair of printed bottoms and play with your tops. You still get the same idea.

An alternative to those not sure they can rock a full jumpsuit but have the legs to pull off a romper. The fun option with a romper is that you can always put on a textured pair of tights to shake things up a bit. It's an easy area to add interest to your outfit as well as pulling double duty by keeping you a little bit warmer.

A nice cross between the long-sleeve romper and the tank-top bodice. The slouchy silhouette maintains the ease of the design while the shorts yield room for tights and the top has potential for your typical layering pieces like t-shirts; all areas you can add material so you can still wear this piece into the Fall.

Once you've picked out your preferred style of jumpsuit or romper, you need to put on a couple of extra items to really pull the look together. Think about the items I mentioned already (T-shirts and boots) and also throw in sweaters and jackets. If you're rocking a printed version, a simple throw-on like the one pictured above will tone down the loudness of the print. It also happens to be a great addition for a more simple jumpsuit/romper.

You can't go wrong with a traditional pullover with a V-neck. This will give you a "two piece" look so you'll appear to be wearing pants and a sweater instead of a jumpsuit and sweater :)

Last but not least is the cardigan or in this case, the boyfriend cardigan. Always a classic cover up, the cardigan will give you warmth and again, help break up the outfit into another element so you're not visually weighed down by the design of the jumpsuit. You have to give you eye more things to look at individually so that when seen as a whole, the outfit is a ten.

Swimwear 101: Best Swimsuits for Men

It's just as important for guys to look good at the pool as it is for women. Unlike the trend in womens swimwear, smaller swimsuits on men are not always sexy...

... so stick to shorts.

But when there are so many eyesore versions to pick from, how do you choose? Will you go the route of of the many men who've gone before you and wear what can only be described as something you picked up last-minute at a gift shop somewhere (see left)? Or will you opt for something a little less Hawaii 5-0 this summer? The basics of all clothing, including swimwear, is a balance of proportions. Don't go for anything too small or too short. Nothing too long (ie- hangs down to your calves) or too baggy.

Once you've found the perfect swimsuit that has you throwing caution to the wind and actually wanting to go out half naked in public, it's time to shop for the swimsuit cover-up. They are, just like their name suggests, a way to cover up your newly sun-kissed skin. Because of my trip I'm having to face staring down at my glaring white thighs which haven't seen the sun in quite some time. My goal is to come home in five days actually looking like I've been on vacation- a golden brown only Hawaii sun can give you. But that means finding the right swimsuit while I melt in the 80+ degree weather. It has to be cute, but also functional (no Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunctions please).

Tips for shopping for your next swimsuit:

Shop on a ‘good’ day. Don’t shop for your skimpiest items of clothing on days you’d rather not even be seen out of your home! Don’t set foot in a fitting room when you’re having a bad day, PMSing, going through a break-up or otherwise. Even if your feet or back hurt, stop.

A slightly snug fit in the changing room will keep your decency intact as you hit the pool. Remember that fabrics expand in the water! Second, remember that swimsuit sizing generally runs small because they need to be fitted. If you’re more of a sun worshiper than a water baby, go for what feels most comfortable and gives you the least amount of tan lines.

Take the stress out of the trying on. Shop online and turn your home into a stress-free fitting room.
Go custom! Online stores like Victoria’s Secret swim shop have a large selection of suits, many of which are separates that you can mix-n-match.

Swimwear 101: Plus-Size Gals Celebrating Their Curves

I'm about to head off on a last-minute (much needed) vacation to Hawaii with my husband. The first since we were married in 2009. When he told me we were going I was first very excited thinking about the hot sun, warm sand and cool blue waters. Then I realized, thanks to a substantial injury and a lack of self-control when it came to chocolate, that I didn't have a swimsuit that fit me anymore. All of a sudden my shock and awe at the good news was blown to bits by my worry over having to swimsuit shop for myself. Sure, it's much easier to help other people show for swimwear. I'm a wardrobe stylist, I'm supposed to know how to do this- which I do. But the pace I had made with my thighs was on shaky ground when I knew I wasn't going to be able to hide them in clothing all the time.

So I set about to find myself a plus-sized swimsuit. I'm one of those weird body shapes that is not plus-sized everywhere, but my bust has grown so much over the last year (38E) that ~~regular~~ misses sized suits let my cups runneth over (Psalm 23:5). After an exhaustive online search of plus-sized swimwear, including ordering and truing many of them on myself, here are my favorites...

This is the little number I will be sporting this week. The little ruffled skirt hides the top of my thighs, but not so much that it looks like a dress. It actually has a cute vintage feeling to it.

Who says plus-sized has to nothing but a swim dress? I think this ruffle is great, and would nicely play up your bust line to proportionally minimize the size of your thighs.

Torrid $34

Have a top that you love, but a bottom that you don't (I can't help but laugh at the pun)? These shorts are great because they will match pretty much any top you already have, and they are adjustable via the draw strong cords on the sides.

A not-so-fitted tankini is a great way to hide any lumps and bumps in your midsection. It's also a good option for those of us with longer torsos.

This large print will keep the eye moving and won't linger over any spots you don't want seen. The ruched sides also help disguise and bulges.

How to Dress Well When You're Feeling Fat

You can't sit there and tell me you've never felt fat. You just can't. Guys, same thing. We ALL have felt fat at one point or another, regardless if it's true or not. Considering I have been in this bloated bubble myself the last few days I figured I would do myself- and you- a favor and discuss easy ways to dress stylishly when your figure feels fuller than usual. It's times like these that I'm thankful for being a stylist in the bay area as we're still in the trend of drape-y tops, skinny bottoms, and soft sweaters- key pieces to solving this particular gut-busting problem.

It's hard to work around your own fatheaded funk and see your closet as an area with potential to make you feel great when all you see is your gut. Ladies, here are a few looks to prevent the plump from showing:

The interesting use of draping in this otherwise simple tank skims the body without hugging it and also hangs perfectly around the middle, hiding any bulges below.

A dress with interesting details (like the wrapping detail on the bodice) distracts the eye from any "problem areas". Plus, the sewn-in waist gives you shape with the soft folds in the skirt providing additional tummy security.


A shirtwaist dress is never a bad idea. The A-line draws the eye out along the hips making your waist look that much slimmer. (Think Kate Middleton at her wedding...her hips were padded!)

Don't forget, a standard go-to outfit for any fat day is leggings and a tunic. You've got the best of both worlds: comfort and coverage.

Guys, you're a little bit trickier. You don't have fun flowy tops or dresses available to help you with any belly bloat that can appear. So, how do we fix that? Easy! Use what you (more than likely) already have and, as a general rule, stay away form hoodies. There are more stylish ways to hide the chub:


Start with a simple T. If it's a little big, that's ok! It should hug you in the shoulders and across your chest and drape in the middle.

Don't be afraid of sweaters. The vertical closure in the front brings in your shape while at the time hiding any bulge and visually cutting your torso in half, making you appear slimmer.

Another sweater option if you really just can't get into cardigans. The key with any sweater is body SKIMMING, not body HUGGING. The structured shirt underneath in this example also adds a touch of volume to hide your own personal bulk.

Hopefully I've given you a little more confidence the next time you face your closet feeling like you need to "trim the fat" (and it doesn't relate to an over abundance of clothes).

Spring 2011: Matthew Williamson Arrives at Macy's Impulse

There's definitely a sweet spot in my heart for capsule collections. I remember my first purchase like it was yesterday: a green cotton tank top with a white, chain-link design by Proenza Schouler for Target. That was well over 3 years ago but I still have and love that top! Since then, I've thought designer collaborations were the greatest invention since sliced bread! These days I try to go visit- and purchase- a collection whenever possible. I love being able to have new, innovative designs available at my fingers tips and for a fraction of the price. Now, the king of the jet set has touched down at Macy's, just for us, bringing with him an orchestra of bold, boho-chic pieces.

Not a "basic" in sight...it's refreshing!

In an effort to bring their customer more fresh fashion, Macy's brought in Matthew Williamson, a designer with a penchant for bold prints and bits of glitz for round two of their burgeoning capsule series. Matthew's capsule collection is right on trend with loud color, easy silhouettes, and a 70's influence that's hard to resist, all available at the trendy/contemporary Impulse department of Macy's.

Some of these pieces are just too cute to resist! But that's the thing with capsule collections, they're "limited time only" situations. Better get there quick as this arrival has been buzzing around the internet for a few days now...pieces are sure to run out.

How To Series: How to Prevent Hanger "Bumps"

Have you ever woken up in the morning, excited to wear that new sweater only to pull it off the hanger and see that it sprouted wings over night? And some days if it isn't a flying sweater it's a pointy blouse? Solving clothing conundrums should be in a stylists' bag of tricks and Beyond Black has got a solution up our sleeves. There are actually a couple of ways to help keep your clothing grounded and more appropriately rounded to your shoulder.

No-Pucks, nifty hanger attachments available for both wire and plastic hangers.

If you've got a closet filled with traditional plastic hangers, or even a stack of dry cleaning wire ones, these little "hanger accessories" are available to slope your hangers into an appropriate shape. Snapping them on essentially helps shape your hanger into a softer, curved angle meant to mirror the natural slope of your shoulders. Hangers with the more abrupt and angular shape make for more profound angel wings.

The best way to capitalize on what you already own would be to buy an accessory that improves it, much like the No-Pucks. Then again, if you want your hanger to work for you, all the time, without an attachment, a thicker hanger will also work.

You should remember to match the weight of the item to the thickness of the hanger. If you have more coats and jackets, make sure your biggest hangers are reserved for them. The smaller strapped tops will do just fine on thinner hangers.

Of course, there is a back-end issue here as well: once you've fixed the hanger problem, how do you keep the shirt on? Those nice wooden hangers are quite slippery and unless you're hanging a crew neck, everything else is going to fall right off. The good news, The Container Store has you covered. Fuzzy strips keep shirts from slipping off

Only $1.99, these hanger strips are self-adhesive and will not only keep the shirt from slipping, it will also help hold it in place over the slope, thus further ensuring your shirts remains the proper shape.

Whichever direction you decide to go, each offers a perfectly good solution. Your clothes shouldn't be flying away anytime soon.

Anglomaniac Fever- A Wardrobe Stylist Weighs in on the Fashions of the Royal Wedding

Two good friends of mine got married in Tulsa last weekend, to each other. On my way to the "oil capital of the world" I did a little bit of light reading on the plane (see above). Using the Us Weekly as my trusted source for all things British I eagerly flipped through the pages wanting to know all the details of the Royal Wedding. I was merely a babe when Diana and Charles got married in 1981, so this is my real first exposure to the grandness of a Royal wedding. Actually, it was not that long ago I married my own Brit...

... and learned first-hand a thing or two about traditional English weddings... But my walk down memory lane will have to stop there because, I'll be honest, the planning days leading up to the wedding were the best of times, and the worst of times (planning this intimate shindig gave me my first gray hairs). I can only imagine what goes into planning the Royal Wedding. What I do want to touch base on was the fashion for the event that would forever cease my being as Jennifer Held. My husband Scott and I agreed, as far as the budget was concerned, that we could each pick one thing that was so important to use that we really wanted to spare no expense in that department. Big surprise to no one (you are reading my fashion blog) I chose the dress as my top priority.

Choosing the ~~I do this for a living so it had better be~~ perfect dress is no small task. It takes a lot of patience, Spanx, and some know-how to get it done without loosing your sanity... no Bridezilla here folks. Unlike Kate, I did not have famous designers vying for my attention. Here are two of her dress options below:

Which dress will she pick? You'll have to wait until April 29th, 2011to find out for sure. While I'm sure it won't be the 2011 equivalent to Diana's ~~large and in charge over abundance of silk and tulle fashion victim~~ dress of the 80's with poof sleeves, it will have to have a certain amount of modesty to it. While I'm never a big fan of looking like you're hiding in your clothes (or in this case a cake topper), she will have to be mindful not to show too much skin and wear a bra. Remember the blown-out-of-proportion bra-less scandal?

Although their fairy-tale wedding won't end in a kiss- which isn't allowed in Westminster Abbey- I have no doubt it will be a princess' fashionable happy ever after.

Back on the plane reading my authority on all things British (Us Weekly), once I was done drooling over Kate's dress options, I got to thinking about what I would wear to the Royal Wedding... and how different that might be from what I was about to wear to my friends' wedding in Tulsa.

Spring 2011: Elastic-Waist Pants...For Work?!

Stretchy, elastic, room to grow, comfortable, easy, casual but cute, what women want...with so many positives it's a wonder why the whole female working world isn't in "yoga pants" all the time.

Whenever I'm with a client I always profess my love and lifestyle as a creature of comfort. I think it's important for them to know that I understand their anxiety of having to "suffer for fashion" for the sake of looking good. NOT TRUE. That's not how I do business. I tell them if I could, I would live in my pajama pants and baggy sweatshirts. After a hard days work of being glued into my skinny jeans there's no feeling better than ripping them off, tossing them back in the closet, and putting on my PJ pants, one gloriously soft leg at a time. The freedom my skin feels and knowing I can eat as much as I want with no one seeing my 'food baby' later is awesome. Sure I love the slimming effect dark-wash jeans have on my legs but an elastic-waist yields something no other pants can: comfort. So what is the solution to the ancient battle of style vs. comfort? Or, can there be a happy union of both?

The NY Times recently published an excellent article debating the pros and cons of wearing stretchy pants to work, with opinions coming straight from the real ladies in high places who do it or deny it. Stacie Spychalski Buckley, an Atlanta-based director of operations for a professional sports website, has a more auditory opinion about the women in her office: "There are people in yoga pants and track suits; you hear them shush-shush-shushing down the hallways. I’m like, ‘What are you doing? This is a professional place. Wear a sweater set and a pair of pants.'". Stacie isn't alone in her sentiments either. Kat Griffins, editor of Corporette, a fashion and lifestyle blog for professional women, states: "If it’s a casual day and you’re just working in your office and you’re pregnant and you can’t find anything else to fit, maybe yoga pants are acceptable...But for everyone else, really, get a pair of pants". The funny thing is the empirical data doesn't back up their backlash. According to WGSN, a trend forecasting company, "4 percent of women in the United States now say they wear strict business attire, with 31 percent claiming to dress completely casually". With that many women preferring to be comfortable it's no wonder sales for athletic-wear retailers like Lululemon, who carry fashionable workout wear, have increased. And like the lovely lady in the image above said: "If your entire outfit looks very chic, there’s no reason not to [wear them]".

I have to agree. We all know that the accessories and even your hair and makeup can make or break an outfit so why not be comfortable and fabulous at the same time? Think it can't be done, wrong again! Just take note of the cute gal pictured above. She looks chic and put together; key words when searching for the best ways to style your yoga pants. However, I must issue a warning. There appears to be rules surrounding the acceptability of stretchy-waist pants in the work place: "Among [the] women interviewed for this article, there exists a caste system of elastic-waist pants, governing their permissibility for certain occasions. Many said they would never wear jeggings...". Apparently, some offices will forever require a uniform and a certain degree of thoughtful clothing choices. I can understand that. However, I agree with Sally Lohan, director for United States content on WGSN, when it comes to her thoughts on loosening up on the idea of elastic: "I think it’s more about a crossover of lifestyles and a blurring of activities than a general addiction to dressing down. Jeggings and leggings have been perfectly acceptable attire in many workplaces for a while. It really depends on the style and the styling". As a stylist, I hands down agree. The way you put something together matters more for appearance sake than each individual piece on their own. However, even I have my style standards...

Oh PajamaJeans, how do I dislike thee. They lure you in with promises of being both comfortable and stylish but the truth is the construction looks cheap, the fabric is clearly not denim, and there's no guarantee they'll fit you well enough to look good, just like in the image above. Nothing about this ad is visually appealing. Why? All the lines and proportions are out of balance for the shape of this girls bum! Not every butt was made equal and is therefore not going to fit into these "jeans" well enough to ever make them appropriate for work. You know the slogan, "Just Say No"....that's how I feel about Pajama jeans. I know my philosophy is 'try everything once' but these...just say no.

I think it's safe to say this battle might be a personal judgement call. If you're into the relaxed but put together look, and can wear it in the office, by all means do it. But if you must abide by a stricter code of clothing conduct, a little extra effort or an entire new game plan might be best for you. All in all, the plan should be to show your office you wear the pants, even if they're yoga, sweat, or stretchy.

The actress Elizabeth Taylor died Wednesday in Los Angeles at age 79, the Associated Press reported. Ms. Taylor started in movies at age 9, and it was a quick leap from "National Velvet" to "A Place in the Sun" and from there to "Cleopatra" as she transformed into a film queen. In a career of more than 70 years and more than 50 films, she won two Academy Awards as best actress.

The Marriage of Chic and Geek- Connected Clothing for the Fashion Saavy Gadget Lovers

I am a self-confessed tech geek. A "techie" if you will- (tech·ie also tek·kie (tk) n. Informal: One who studies or is highly interested or proficient in a technical field, especially electronics.) But that doesn't sound very fashionable for a wardrobe stylist now does it? The real questions is, do fashion and tech ever meet in the middle of chic and geek?

My first exposure to high tech- "connected" if you will- clothing was when I was shopping for a new snowboarding jacket five years back. Back then, iPod integrated clothing was just starting to show up once retailers understood the power Apple's brand of technology had over consumers and jumped on the successful brand's bandwagon. This peaked my interest. Where else were we seamlessly integrating our digital lifestyle with our outdoorsy one? Being a surfer, I did some research. There were, and still are, waterproof accessories like headphones and iPod cases. While unsafe because listening to your music full blast hinders your ability to hear warning shouts in these shark infested San Francisco waters, it still amazes me that we have the ability to take our music with us anywhere.

Aside from the fact that I think one of the best things about being outdoors is being one with mother nature and her own soundtrack, I like having the option to have my gadgets within reach and easy to use. That seems to make a lot of sense when you're wearing gloves and stuffed into a parka that makes you look like the Michelin man. But what about our day-to-day lives? Mashable's article Wired Fashion addressed this very issue. It seems the fashion world is turning its ear towards the needs of geeks like myself. While they don't always hit the mark...

... some are close...

and some are genius!

While we may not being seeing a high tech clothing runway show at New York Fashion Week any time soon, it does beg the question, ~~does fashion need to~~ will fashion be able to keep up with the speed of technology?

Spring 2011: That 70's Trend

Though some of you may be remiss to admit it, the 70s are back! And in a big way. Of course we all know fashion is cyclical and nothing is new anymore but you should always expect to see the return of a trend, style, or look about every 20 to 30 years. That said, the return of flared jeans, platforms, jumpsuits, soft hair, floppy hats, maxi dresses, and round sunglasses are right on track.

I was a little hesitant to get on board with this trend for fear of it leaving as quickly as it has arrived but then I watched The Towering Inferno...and fell in love with the 70s. What a wonderland of inspiration! Taking place in San Francisco and centering on the world's tallest building going up in a blaze (hence, the title), the movie cemented my new-found love for long, low-cut evening gowns, head-to-toe color, draped shirting, and soft curls. It also put a new fashion icon at the forefront of my mind, Faye Dunaway. I've never wanted to wear a matching, monochromatic suit more!

Though the film revolved around more "society types" living in the San Francisco, there was definitely a moment for those on the street who were rocking long, printed jackets, wide-leg pants, and high shoes. In fact, that's more in line with what we're seeing on the runway and the streets today. People seem eager to move away from their skinnies to get a little breathing room.

Japan, Far From Over

As much as I try, I cannot stop thinking about the disaster in Japan. It's on every news channel at every hour of the day and I for one am like a moth to the flame; I tune in at every chance I can. Even though I'm informed and have donated to relief effort, I still feel so helpless. I only wish I could do more. If you're feeling like me here's a GREAT website to check out and send in a donation. Not everything has to be about money but in times like these, everything is about community.

Second Harvest is an established non-profit in Japan that helps people in need. Even before the earthquake and subsequent tsunami of March 11, Second Harvest was busy donating food and items to the over 650,000 Japanese people without any type of "food security". They made it there mission to help those who couldn't help themselves and have now dedicated their energies to the relief effort. With so many thousands of people newly in need, any donation is happily accepted and greatly appreciated.

Please take a little time out of your day and post this some place where others can be informed and start spreading the word. So far, only $25 million has been raised for Japan, a fraction of that contributed to Haiti and Hurricane Katrina. I know we can all do so much better than that. As George Takei tweeted on that fateful day: TodayWeAreAllJapanese

In light of the recent events and tragedy unfolding over in Japan, I wanted to put my energy into a positive outlet and to pay homage to the brilliance of their fashion designers. These 3 particular artists pushed the boundaries of the industry and weren't afraid to express their creativity through otherwise "unmarketable" designs. It was fashion for arts-sake and for that, we should be grateful. There is beauty in even the most nontraditional and unexpected shapes and styles.

"Thou Shalt Not Endure Mom Butt"- Our SF Indie Fashion Interview

When popular online resource SF Indie Fashion contacted us to help put together a denim buying guide, I thought YES! Now there's a tool I know most women would definitely benefit from. How many of us have looked at those neatly stacked squares of jeans and found them threatening? Digging for your size alone is an act of futility as no matter how hard you try those darn things tumble off and wind up in a mess on the floor. Plus, who knows if you even get the right style or fit and have to go back in for round two.

Needless to say I was thrilled (I'm even doing a little jig right now) to put some of our experiences onto paper as our heads are practically bursting with clandestine clothing knowledge from years spent as personal shoppers and wardrobe stylists. It felt great to get that information out there, in a readily available and formidable fashion resource like SFIF*.

There's nothing like working with other people in the fashion industry who equally share your enthusiasm for sartorial problem solving. They came armed with a list of queries ranging from how to pick the right pair of skinnies- now considered a staple in your closet- to butt pocket adornments and affordable denim options. Hopefully this guide with help everyone assuage any future denim debacles. Even in a city as seemingly laissez-faire as San Francisco, thou shalt not endure "mom butt", muffin top, or butt cracks.

How To Series: How to Keep Your Blue Jeans Blue

Whenever I'm on the sales floor working as a personal shopper I hear various women reiterating the same questions and concerns about clothing. How is this supposed to fit? Where was this made? How do I hide my tummy/legs/arms/bust? Truth be told, even we humble stylists ask ourselves those same questions when we shop. Before even considering something for the dressing room my next question is inevitably, "What are the care instructions?". Okay, first it might be "How much is this thing anyway?" but the other is a close second! One of the perks about having someone like me in your pocket is we are filled with useful information that is otherwise not so readily available online. Years in school and walking the floor has prepped us for anything. So here's a blog dedicated to answering the number one question I still get today: how do I wash my jeans? Actually, it's a blog to answer the small caveat often attached to that question: How do I keep the color from fading?

So how DO you keep jeans from fading? The answer is actually quite simple and easily found online: vinegar. However, what I know, and what isn't so accessible on the internet, is WHY you need to use vinegar to help set the dye. As a resource on fabric properties or "home made" cleaning remedies I continually use Fabric Reference, Fourth Edition, by Mary Humphries. Quite possibly the fabric bible short of a swatch kit. It provided all the information about the dye used in jeans, how the jeans are dyed and what that means. How vinegar is involved will be understood in a sec.


No fancy vinegars needed. A plain, white one will do the trick.

First things first, the dye used to color jeans is called "indigo". Traditionally used to make blue jeans that familiar blue, indigo is a vat dye. A vat dye is a dye that is insoluble in water, meaning it won't bleed in water. However, in order to be applied to cellulose fibers (like the cotton in denim and most natural fibers which are porous) indigo must first be made soluble in an alkaline bath. Once in the bath, the dye is taken in by the fibers. When it is removed from the bath, the dye oxidizes and sets in the fiber as an insoluble color.

Why then would it fade with several washings if the dye is set? Because the dye is always weaker and susceptible to coming off (crocking) in any washing machine with base, or alkaline, conditions. Vinegar is an acid, the opposite of alkaline, and a good combatant at preventing color-loss with vat dyed products. Using a little bit in your machine prevents the water from becoming alkaline and further removing the color from your jeans. It's just an extra precaution you can take to ensure your true blues stay saturated.

How much vinegar you should use varies on the blogs and internet from a 1/4 of a cup to a full cup. My best suggestion is take Vinegarbook.net's advice and do a 50/50 solution of a water and vinegar bath for 10-15 minutes before washing. Afterwards, proceed to wash your jeans as per my instructions in the SF Indie Fashion blog. You can also try adding a quarter cup to a full cup of vinegar to your machine before laundering with regular detergent. The main idea I gather is that the vinegar needs to be added before any other product is introduced. And though I have yet to try this solution out myself, the process should help keep our jeans dark and our rumps practically pickled to perfection in a nice, dark denim.

How To Series: How to Care for A Wool Suit

This one goes out to all the guys in the audience. I'm sure most of you, if not all of you, own a nice wool suit. (If you don't, go out and get one immediately because it's a staple to your closet!) The one thing I'm guessing is that not one of you knows how to properly care for it. If you've been throwing it in the wash* or dry-cleaning it regularly, you're doing a great disservice to your clothes.

Rule number one, and the one you might find most surprising, your suit only needs to be dry-cleaned about twice a year. Extensive cleaning, on any garment not just suits, wears the fibers down reducing their strength and luster.

Rule 2: After wearing, dust the suit off and remove food stains with a stiff, wool bristle brush. There are great websites offering menswear accessories that are both functional and attractive.

Rule 3: Be sure to brush the suit lengthwise. This is in tune with the direction (weave) of the threads and won't break them. It's similar to shaving in the direction of your facial hair to avoid ingrown hairs.

Rule 4: Hang your suit on a contoured hanger to maintain the shape of the shoulders. Make sure it's also thick enough to hold the weight of both pieces of your suit. Use the clamp hanger for your pants, which should be hung upside down to hold the crease through the center of the leg.


Look for cedar hangers, another 2-for-1: cedar is the best wood to keep closets/clothes fresh and free of moths

Rule 5: Always store suits uncovered (more breathable) and away from direct heat (this one's fairly obvious, no?)

Rule 6: Try to let your suit "hang out" for at least 24 hours before and after wearing. This allows the wrinkles time to fall out and helps the suit keep its shape.

How To Series: How to Waterproof Your Shoes

One of the greatest lessons I've learned since being a personal shopper and stylist is to take care of the shoes you wear. I am constantly on my feet, moving from the city streets to the store floor so my shoes- and for that matter my feet- can take a real beating. It helps to make sure that my footwear is well taken care of. One trick is to prevent them from taking on unnecessary damage from the elements, such as water.

I should probably mention first that water doesn't actually "damage" leather, per say. Mostly it just stains it. The damage comes when your leather item, like shoes, has been submerged in water and allowed to dry by an open heat source. The stresses from the shoe-making process are weakened and the leather tries to return to its natural shape. Thus, warping becomes another issue to keep in mind when stepping out for a rainy day. Saving your shoes from staining and warping takes a little extra TLC.

Calling on my trusty leather expert, I found out that the best you can hope for with any waterproofing product is to make your items water resistant. Unless your shoes are made from vinyl, they'll need some kind of treatment to keep the water out. The spray stuff sits on top of the leather and helps water bead up and run/fall off your shoes when there's enough water to do so.

Mink oil is actually a better product to consider. You rub it into the top layers of the leather to provide a deeper protection. It causes the water to bead and roll off but more reliably than the sprays. Plus, the oil also acts a conditioner for your leather, keeping it soft and crack free.

These types of products usually only work on leather that is flat, not napped like nubuck or suede. For those types of items, you can use specific spray products. This way most of the product is captured in the rough surface of the leather and creates a better seal.

All in all, these products are more than affordable and will save you tons on repairing and purchasing shoes in the long-run. If you just take the time to treat your shoes, they'll carry you farther.

Here are a few last tips to improve your footwear: as a general rule you should look into rotating your shoes out every day to give them a break, again increasing their longevity. Also, invest in some shoe trees. They'll maintain the shape of your shoes (preventing warping) and if they're cedar, keep the moths away. Plus, some are adjustable, allowing you to stretch your own shoes in your own time instead of taking them to a cobbler.

How To Series: How to Fold a T-Shirt in Two Seconds!

Because everyone can use a little help in their lives, here's an excellent video* to show you how to quickly and perfectly fold all your T-shirts. The method doesn't require a folding board and it's rather counter-intuitive; which is the fun thing about it. It gives your brain a break; some fun in a clothing riddle.
As someone whose tested it, it's an awesome way to fold your shirts but it's a skill you'll lose if you don't practice.

Even if you think you'll never really use this way, it's still just cool, right?!

How To Series: How to Fold a Fitted Sheet

And thus begins my "How To" series to kick us all off in the right direction as the new year continues!
The goal is to tackle as many enigmatic issues in our sartorial lives as I can. From folding T-shirts to weather proofing your shoes, there are certain answers that seem to elude us. To throw another bone in the mix, why is it sales people can't agree on the right method either? Instead all you hear is that old saying: "I don't know. I just work here".

One of the greatest mysteries in life- at least to me- has been how to properly fold a fitted sheet. I always think, HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO FOLD THESE THINGS?! Perpetual laziness and no enthusiasm for laundry has me dumping my sheets in a crumpled mess in the closet. What drove me to answer this question today is because my wonderful but geriatric cat has vomited on my bed for the fourth time this week. I am getting more and more acquainted with fitted sheets than I ever thought possible.

The best thing about technology, particularly the internet, is that any question you might have has already been answered and usually comes with a handy video to give you the blow by blow. After watching this, I felt ready to properly fold any fitted bed sheet. Any size, any fabric, bring it on! I got so excited I even asked my BF if he'd like to practice. (He looked at me like I was crazy...rightfully so I think) Good thing I have some sheets washing right now to get my folding on. This of course also means that my cat has a fresh place to puke. Not that it matters much to him, I'm sure.

So it's official: I am not impressed with the shoe selection from justfab.com. I tried, I really did! But they just didn't nail it for me. Pumps that bordered on "hooker" heels, cheap looking boots, and otherwise boring stilettos didn't do much to tickle my fashion fancy. However, all is not lost...there was a tab I didn't notice at first...
Under BagFabulous an entire array of satchel-shaped goodies were waiting for me! Anyone that knows me knows I have a huge weakness for accessories, including bags. It I had a dime for every new purse I bought, I'd have enough bags to carry all that change.


I think I need that gold sequin one...

Update Stores That Shop For You, Part 2

I'm sure you're all anxiously waiting to hear what the Just Fabulous store picked out for me the second time around. As you'll remember from my previous post that the first options shown to me weren't thrilling under any circumstances. The one on the left has an interesting design detail around the top of the shoe but the low heel and cheap looking leather give the shoe a juvenile appearance. The one on the right has a nice flat sole and I like the wrap-around buckles at the top. But the color is drab and I'm not a fan of shoes that have a "suede" finish, unless of course they're real suede. Sorry to say, these boots were nixed. Next up:

Pretty pumps for sale

What I like about these shoes are the lower heels and simple shape. Ever the minimalist, I enjoy the less cumbersome side of design. However, the left shoe is so boring I'm practically asleep looking at it and the right shoe is darn near perfect except for that awful peep toe. And though they both have that suede finish, it works here because not as much material is used. As you might have guessed, these shoes were also nixed. Last but not least, a winner!

This was listed under the options that have sold out in my size (an issue that comes with having an average sized foot I suppose). If I was in the market for a cool pump, this would be it! I love the shape, I love the texture, and I love the juxtaposition of the studs in the platform against an otherwise simple silhouette. Now, the heel height still gives me some anxiety but having the platform there is a blessing.

All in all, I'm not totally sold but I'm not ready to walk away just yet. How about one more chance? Let's see what I get in another 3 to 5 days...

Follow-up "Stores That Shop For You"

As some of you dear readers know, I wrote an honest yet mildly defensive blog on an interesting new trend in online shopping: stores that shop for you. Well what I neglected to tell you was that I signed up and I did indeed create my own boutique. As a personal shopper, I'm a bit ashamed. But in my defense: I prefer my own retail therapy to be a "relaxing" hunt. Plus, I wanted to give them a chance to see if they could really do what I do best... the verdict is still out.

Here's my reaction to this: meh. It's not all bad though! I like the middle, patent nude pump a LOT but the other two, really?! The far left is just not my kind of shoe and the far right has a heel with an eating disorder. I'm 5' 9" honey, I need a little more stability than that.

So, they got 1 out of 3...I think they've got a ways to go. However, a glance down the side panel showed me I could request a new set of options! All I had to do was rate each shoe- which was fun because this is their rating system:

- and they would be happy to send me a new list of items more catered to my tastes. Truthfully, I can't wait to see what comes next. The fact I could be brutally honest and select "You're Joking?" as a means of communicating my dislike for a shoe was liberating. It also gave me a little more respect for the company.

We'll see what arrives in 3 to 5 days...

New Online Trend: Stores That Shop For You

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: being a personal shopper/stylist in the Bay Area is awesome. There's so much style everywhere it's inspiring! Plus I'm a confessed shopaholic, whether it's online or out on the street, so my eye never settles as I'm constantly on the hunt for the next best thing. Imagine my surprise when I started coming across websites designed to do what I do; shop for you! I feel a little like Captain Picard on the USS Enterprise facing the final frontier. Except this time, the ship can steer itself.

I can sense your apprehension, Captain

The concept is relatively simple: you go to said site, set up an account- which is just like adding yourself to a mailing list- answer a few questions as to whether or not you find some items and people in different images "more my style" or "not my style", and sit back and let the website do the shopping for you. You'll receive email updates when your "boutique" has new items in it to entice you to shop and viola! you've just established your own virtual personal shopper and boutique all rolled into one. It's all a little weird, isn't it?

So many options, so little time

Sites like the much hyped boutiques.com (owned and operated by Google) and justfab.com boast that they've cut out the middle man (ahem!) to make our shopping lives easier. The "tastemakers" used at boutiques direct the recognition software used within the site to add various items to your store while justfab relies on their style experts, Katherine Power and Hillary Kerr (aka founders of whowhatwear.com), to choose the best pieces for you. With both sites backed by huge internet power players, you can expect to see more websites following suit. At least, that's my prediction.

This could be me and you, finding fabulousness together

But speaking as a personal shopper, I'd like to offer a rebuttal to this seemingly amazing new break through. I read recently in InStyle magazine that based on a poll of readers, over 94% had never used a personal shopper. I was shocked but not blown away. I know that the prices revolving around these types of services can be steep. It is after all considered a "luxury" service and we are in a recession. However, the pay off and benefits are more than worth the money. The one thing we do that no online site ever will is make a personal connection to our clients. We are physically there with you, working through the emotions your closet has held onto, and we're there holding your hand as we help you find that new you in the dressing room. That sort of process can be life changing. What website can claim to do that? Without us, these websites are nothing more than cold, flat images on a screen assuming they're your taste. With us, you have a sounding board and hopefully, a friend.

Honeysuckle, Pantone's Super Sweet Prediction for 2011

Believe it or not, the colors you're wearing now were actually brainstormed years before they ever made an appearance on your body. Currently, there's a planner you can purchase which gives you the palette for the Spring/Summer 2012 home and fashion industries. But that kind of clandestine information doesn't come cheap. Be prepared to fork over $750 for a guarantee to be "on trend" that season. The reason some designers are known for their "forward thinking" is because they purchase said secrets.

Color forecasting company Pantone has a pretty lineup in store for us this Spring. 2011 is officially looking like a cool sorbet on a warm night. And it sounds delicious too: Honeysuckle, Peapod, Coral Rose, Beeswax, Lavender, Blue Curacao, Silver Cloud, Silver Peony, Regatta, and Russet. (if you're wondering what Curacao and Regatta are, the former is a popular island resort in the Netherlands Antilles with tropical-colored water and the latter is a meeting place for boat races, typically in richer blue water.)

Honeysuckle, in a pink lemonade hue and not the usual white, is the dominate color. It's not a coral and it's not a fuschia, it's somewhere in the middle. You might know it by its lesser name, pink. As Pantone states on it's home page honeysuckle is: "Energizing...lifts spirits and imparts confidence to meet life's ongoing challenges". I'd say we could all use a little lift in our spirits, especially with the new year just dawning. Thank goodness Nordstrom has some items you can use now to refresh your emotions. Why not try a few of these accessories before braving an entire outfit? You'll be ahead of the curve now and on trend later.

They may be a little Barbie inspired but these YSL platforms are cute and quintessentially girly. How can you resist?

No San Francisco girl worth her sartorial salt leaves home without a scarf. The key to this weather is layering so tie one on in this lovely sorbet shade.


Longchamp, $98

A large bag is every girls best friend. Carry all your essentials/junk in a colorful bag instead of the usual black or brown. Plus, keeping your wallet in a place that evokes happy feelings helps maintain that new year exuberance.

Hopefully you find some way to incorporate this energizing color into your wardrobe. I think I'm beginning to feel the effects just from writing about it! 2011 already seems to be coming up roses...or, I mean, honeysuckles.

Keeping Your New Year's Resolution

Happy New Year!! It feels so good to be back. There's just something so refreshing about saying goodbye to a previous year. It's like the same feeling I used to get when the school year was starting up again. You're practically bursting at the seams to go back-to-school shopping and you convince yourself that this year you'll be a stellar student and get straight A's. I think we all do the same thing as December 31st gets closer and closer. We get more and more excited to kiss away the previous year for a (hopefully) better start to a new one. The tricky part of course becomes how do you keep those new years resolutions?

The number one resolution for most people: lose weight

There are a lot of people who simply refuse to make resolutions because they see it as an inevitable place for failure. They know themselves and know that eventually they'll succumb to temptation, so why make one at all? Thank goodness I'm on Twitter and I happened upon an AMAZING Wall Street Journal article by writer Sue Shellenbarger. She talks us through the means to make and keep a resolution. She even backs up her statements with scientific evidence! What I discovered- relying on your willpower is setting yourself up for failure. The only thing that truly and scientifically works: retraining your brain. Don't worry, it's not impossible. There's even a rewards system! Just stick to your guns, train your brain, and watch that resolution come true. Let's make 2011 the best it can be!!

Problematic Pit Stains Perished Permanently

2010 ended on a client high note with Maureen (not her real name). One of her big concerns were pit stains. It's not that she gets hot all the time, she just sweats a lot. Which, unfortunately, I can relate to. My weapon of choice, armpit guards.
